Summer Basketball From the seasoned pro and college veterans looking to enhance his skills, to the promising young athletes seeking to catch the eye of one of the many fans and scouts in the stands, the San Francisco Bay Area Pro-Am Summer Basketball League provides an excellent opportunity for players, coaches, officials and attendees to mix and have fun in a quality event during the Summer months. Opportunity is the operative word, as countless number of opportunities abound in the league, from being free to the public, to receiving an invitation to play in a pro setting, to being surrounded by friends in the stands and on the court. This forum has proven to be quite a bargain for scores of Bay Area hoop fanatics, who, with their family, could not afford or able to get to a local college or pro game during their respective season. Over 20,000 fans come to the legendary Kezar Pavilion each Summer to witness this extravaganza and watch these past, present and future legends exhibit their talent. I organized this event, for the past 30 years, with the concept that the league would bring people together, add to the quality of life in the Bay Area and provide an alternative for family fun during the Summer months. The League, which has brought national and international attention to San Francisco, is a cooperative effort of Mayor Gavin Newsom, Supervisors Sean Elsbernd & Sophie Maxwell, SF Recreation & Park Department, and the SF Police Dept.(Park Station), to provide Bay Area families, teens, and seniors a good alternative during the Summer months for fun and enjoyment. The SF Bay Area Women's Basketball League was formed in 1995 to provide a fun atmosphere and good time in the community for top quality players, teams and spectators from around the Bay Area. Both leagues are represented with current and past college, high school and recreation players along with current and past national or international pros. There are no league tryouts, as each team has an open roster policy for new additions at anytime during the league, providing that coach wishes to add players. Jon Greenberg-League Director |
